Women's Tennis Beats Miami in Second Match of Doubleheader

The University of Louisville swept visiting Miami of Ohio 7-0 Saturday night in the second match of the doubleheader at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards, 4-0, took the doubles point and then swept through all six singles positions for the win.

"This was a very good test for us and we passed with flying colors," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "Not so much that we won, but how we won. We got a 7-0 win against a team that beat us in a tight match a year ago. I have been telling them that they are a better team that they were last year and this was the evidence they needed to prove that to themselves."

U of L won the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. Mandy Brown and Stefanie Villajuan were the first to finish, rolling 8-2 over Ana Rajkovic and Chloe Heerden at No. 3. The No. 2 pair of Becky Bodine and Rebecca Shine won 8-4 to clinch the point. Julia Fellerhoff and Manuela Velasquez dug their heels in and held off Christine Guerrazzi and Nimisha Mohan with a score of 9-7.

Manuela Velasquez scored the first singles point with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Alix Thurman at No. 3. Rebecca Shine put the Cardinals up 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Christiana Raymond. Becky Bodine clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 over Ana Rajkovic. Top singles player Julia Fellerhoff held on to win 6-3, 6-4 over Nimisha Mohan. At No. 5, Mandy Brown beat Ramona Costea 6-2, 7-5 before Stefanie Villajuan scrambled back for a three set win over Christine Guerrazzi at No. 4 to end the match.
