
Volleyball Sweeps Syracuse

Lola Arslanbekova had 18 kills and 12 digs to lead the No. 15-ranked University of Louisville to a 25-23, 25-12, 25-18 sweep of Syracuse in BIG EAST volleyball action Friday afternoon in Syracuse.
"Our middle Gwen Rucker had a great match for us," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. "Lola led us in kills and added 12 digs. Syracuse has been up and down and had some injuries. Getting a road win is tough in this league. Now we have to focus on Marquette, the last undefeated team in the league."
U of L moves to 19-3 and 8-1 in the BIG EAST and hit .253 and had 11 digs. Rucker had six kills with five blocks and hit .455. Brooke Mattingly had six blocks. SU, which is coached by former U of L head coach Leonid Yelin, was led by Gosia Wlaszczuk's 14 kills and five digs.
Syracuse found itself down six at 12-6 and went on a 7-1 run to take the lead at 15-14. U of L retook the lead on a slide by Brooke Mattingly to go up 17-16 but Syracuse tied again at 21 and forced a Cardinal timeout. U of L scored on an SU error, an ace by Katie George and a kill by Tanya Lukyanenko to get to set point. The Orange scored once more to come within one at 24-23 before the Cards put away the set for the 25-23 win. The Cards hit .308 and were led by Lola Arslanbekova's nine kills.
In the second set, U of L blew out to a 17-8 lead and never looked back for the 25-12 win. The Orange were not helped by-.200 hitting especially with U of L hitting a healthy .333.
In the third set, Syracuse was energized coming out the break and had the lead at 8-7. After the teams traded points, U of L hot some breathing room with a 3-0 run to go up 13-11. The Orange tied at 15 and forced Kordes to call timeout. U of L went on a 10-3 run to end the set and match.
The Cardinals face Marquette Sunday at 2 p.m. CT in McGuire Arena in Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles are 17-3 and 7-0 coming into the weekend.
