LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville women's soccer team closed out the 2011 Courtyard by Marriott Louisville Airport Cardinal Classic with a disappointing 1-0 overtime loss to Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Park.
With the loss, the Cardinals dropped to 1-3-1 overall, while the visiting Chippewas improved to 4-1-1 with the win.
After the two teams competed for 90 minutes without a goal, Central Michigan connected for the game-winner in the 99th minute as Chelsi Abbott tracked down a loose ball in the Cardinals' 18-yard box and found the upper right corner of the net for her first goal of the season. The opening was created after a Louisville defender misplayed a crossing pass, which allowed the opening for Abbott.
"It's really unfortunate to lose a game when one of your key kids makes a mistake and your opponent capitalizes on it," said Cardinals' head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "What we have to do now is stay focused, learn from the lessons this weekend and improve as we move forward."
Overall, the two teams finished with 13 shots each, while the Cardinals had a 5-4 edge in shots on-goal. Central Michigan had a slim 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. In goal, CMU's Grace Labrecque finished with five saves for her first shutout of the season, while Cardinals' senior Chloe Kiefer (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Divine Saviour HS) had three saves in the loss. Louisville junior Courtney Holtz (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods HS) and freshman Erin Yenney (Troy, Ohio/Troy HS) were named to the Courtyard by Marriott Louisville Airport Cardinal Classic All-Tournament Team.
Up next, the Cardinals will travel to Lexington, Ky., for the Tropical Smoothie Invitational. U of L will face rival Kentucky on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m., and will play Butler on Sunday, Sept. 11 at noon ET.
