
Women's Soccer Falls to Baylor

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to visiting Baylor on day one of the 2011 Courtyard by Marriott Louisville Airport Cardinal Classic Friday night at Cardinal Park.
With the loss, the Cardinals dropped to 1-2-1 on the season, while the Bears improved to 4-0-1 overall. Louisville will conclude the Courtyard by Marriott Louisville Airport Cardinal Classic against Central Michigan on Sunday at 2:30 p.m., while Baylor and UK will open the doubleheader at noon ET.
"Our players are learning in these non-conference games that that our opponents are coming to battle and there's not a lot of soccer being played at times," said Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Our players are battling at some level, but we have to learn to create more chances as we battle in these kinds of games."
After the two teams played to a scoreless draw in the first half of action, Baylor broke through for the first goal on a warm and humid night as Natalie Huggins took a pass from Bethany Johnston and scored into the lower right corner of the goal from 12 yards out in the 47th minute. The goal was the second of the season for Huggins, while the assist was the first for Johnston.
More than 20 minutes later, the Bears pushed their lead to 2-0 as Lisa Sliwinski connected on a header from six yards away following a deep set from Hannah Dismuke in the 68th minute. The goal for Sliwinski was her first of the season, while the assist was for Dismuke was her first.
Baylor closed the scoring in the 88th minute as Hanna Gilmore headed in a cross from Vic Hoffman from 11 yards out for the final three-goal margin. It was Gilmore's first goal of the season and the first assist for Hoffman.
Overall, Baylor finished with a 13-10 advantage in shots, including a 6-2 edge in shots on-goal. The Bears finished with a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks while Louisville was whistled for nine fouls to Baylor's eight. Goalkeeper Courtney Seelhorst finished with two saves in the shutout for BU, while senior goalkeeper Chloe Kiefer (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Divine Saviour HS) had three stops for Louisville. Sophomore Angelika Uremovich (Oakville, Ont./St. Ignatius of Loyola) led the Cardinals with four shots in the game.
Following this weekend's Courtyard by Marriott Louisville Airport Cardinal Classic, the Cardinals will travel to Lexington, Ky., for the Tropical Smoothie Invitational. U of L will face rival Kentucky on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m., and will play Butler on Sunday, Sept. 11 at noon ET.
