LEXINGTON, Ky. - Sophomore Katie Walz scored her first career goal to lift the Louisville women's soccer team to a 1-0 double-overtime win against Butler on at the Tropical Smoothie Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the UK Soccer Complex.
With their sixth straight win against Butler, the Cardinals improved to 2-4-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs dropped to 4-4-0 overall. It was Louisville's first overtime win since a 3-2 triumph over Seton Hall on Oct. 23, 2009.
"When you're struggling to get results and your players continue to stay positive and persevere, good things will happen. Obviously, that good thing was a win today," said Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Although at times, it wasn't pretty, we continued to battle and found a way to win. We needed this for confidence as we prepare to open our BIG EAST schedule on Friday at Notre Dame."
With the two teams having played 90 minutes of regulation soccer and a 10-minute overtime period without a goal scored, Walz (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart HS) connected on a cross from freshman Kim Sharo (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall HS) just 48 seconds into the second overtime for the game-winner. Sharo was credited with her first career assist on the goal, which halted a four-game losing skid for the Cardinals.
In goal, senior Chloe Kiefer (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Divine Saviour HS) finished with five saves to earn her second shutout of the season. Overall, Butler finished with an 11-10 advantage in shots, while the teams were even at 5-5 in shots on-goal. The teams finished with three corner kicks each.
Louisville had three players -- Walz, sophomore Nicole Mitchell (Guelph, Ont./Bishop Macdonell HS) and freshman Erin Yenney (Troy, Ohio/Troy HS) -- named to the Tropical Smoothie Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Up next, the Cardinals will open BIG EAST Conference play on Friday at 5 p.m., ET at Notre Dame before hosting DePaul on Sunday at 1 p.m., at Cardinal Park.
