LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Three University of Louisville track and field athletes - two former and one current - competed at their respective country's national championships this week, with each placing in the top 10 in their respective events.
Former track standout and two-time national champion Matt Hughes competed late Friday at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in the 3,000m steeplechase. Hughes entered the meet with the No. 1 overall seed at 8:24.87. The Oshawa, Ontario, native led for a majority of the way despite racing in higher altitude and heavier wind conditions, but the first-place finisher, Alex Genest, won the event in the final 400m. Hughes finished second in 8:58.05. In order to qualify for the IAAF World Championships for Team Canada, Hughes needs to hit the `B' Standard just one more time or achieve the `A' Standard.
Michael Edwards, who finished his redshirt-sophomore campaign this season by winning the BIG EAST outdoor high jump title, was competing on Saturday at the England U-23 & U-20 Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the event. Edwards cleared a career-best 2.18m/7-1.75 to finish second. Previously, his personal-best mark was 2.13m/6-11.75.
Rachel Gehret wrapped up her collegiate career by earning first team All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships after recording a career-best mark of 1.83m/6-0. Competing at the USA Track and Field Championships on Friday, the Altoona, Pa., native soared over the bar at 1.78m/5-10 to tie for ninth.
