LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville track and field teams held their second annual awards banquet on Monday evening in the multi-purpose room of the Student Activities Center.
Along with honoring the team's 15 seniors, coach Ron Mann and track and field supporters Bill and Mary Cheadle handed out four awards.
Earning the outstanding female freshman of the year award was Patrice Gates, while Mattias Wolter was named the male freshman of the year. A thrower, Gates earned points for the Cardinals at the BIG EAST Indoor and Outdoor Championships. She placed third in the weight throw and took sixth in the hammer throw. Wolter, who holds the fastest collegiate time for a freshman in the 3,000m steeplechase (8:51.92), placed second in the event at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships.
For the coaches' award, Rachel Gehret earned the honor on the women's side, while Neil Angermeier won the honor on the men's side. Gehret secured her second career BIG EAST outdoor high jump title this season and ran on the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams. Angermeier, who won the conference's indoor high jump title, dueled in the event at the league's outdoor championships with teammate Michael Edwards and placed second.
Kim Grieshaber and Michael Eaton were named the women's and men's scholar-athlete award winners for their success in and out of the classroom. Grieshaber, an exercise science major, captured her first cross country all-region honor in 2010 and was later named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's All-Academic Team. Eaton, a physics major, was one of 29 male Division I athletes to be selected to be a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient. He earned all-region and all-BIG EAST honors in cross country this season and also was named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.
The final award that was bestowed was the most outstanding athletes of the year. On the women's side, D'Ana McCarty collected the honor, and Matt Hughes was tabbed the men's honoree. McCarty, who earned a pair of All-America distinctions during the indoor season, captured the BIG EAST weight throw title and then was victor of three BIG EAST outdoor titles. She became the fourth female student-athlete in conference history to win three outdoor field event titles in one meet.
The Cardinals return to action on Friday, May 13, at Cardinal Park Track and Soccer Stadium in the Cardinal Twilight. Field events begin at 10 a.m., and the track events start at 6 p.m.
