LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Twenty-three University of Louisville track and field athletes have earned a spot to participate in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary Championship competition, the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced Thursday.
From May 26-28, the qualifying Cardinal athletes will compete at Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington, Ind., on the campus of Indiana University. Tickets for the meet can be purchased at the Hoosiers' ticket office, located at the main entrance of its track and field complex. An all-session pass for adults is $35; single-session passes for students is $10 and $15 for adults. Children two and younger are admitted free of charge.
On the women's side, 12 athletes combined for 18 entries. Senior D'Ana McCarty, a two-time outdoor All-American, qualified in three of the four throwing events (shot put, discus and hammer throw). She ranks in the top-15 regionally in all three disciplines. Classmate Rachel Gehret earned a spot in the high jump and long jump events, ranking eighth and 22nd, respectively.
On the men's side, 11 athletes qualified for 12 entries. Senior Weston Banks will compete in the shot put, where he ranks 17th in the region, and the discus throw, where he ranks 25th. Last year's national champion in the 3,000m steeplechase, Matt Hughes, will be racing alongside teammate Mattias Wolter in the event. The pair ranks in the top 15 in the region.
The fields in Bloomington will consist of 48 athletes in each of the individual events and 24 teams in each of the relays. The top-12 individuals or relay teams at the end of the weekend earn a trip to Des Moines, Iowa, from June 8-11, to participate in the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The 12 in each event from Bloomington and the 12 in each event from Eugene, Ore. - site of the West Preliminary Rounds - will comprise the 24 athlete and relay team fields that will compete at Drake Stadium for the national title.
The 2010 outdoor season marked the inaugural year of the NCAA preliminary rounds after the NCAA previously utilized the regional (four-region) format.
