The University of Louisville women's tennis team is in South Bend, Ind. to compete in the 2011 BIG EAST Tennis Championships hosted by Notre Dame for the second consecutive year. The Cards will face No.5 Marquette on Friday, April 29 at 12:00 p.m. at the Courtney Tennis Center. MU beat UConn 4-0 on Thursday to advance.
The Louisville Cardinals took the No.4 seed in the tournament, moving up two seeds from the 2010 BIG EAST Championships and earning a first round bye match. The Cards are 11-11 overall and 5-1 in BIG EAST play. They took wins from West Virginia, Cincinnati, Rutgers and Marquette. Louisville's only BIG EAST loss was a hard fought 4-3 loss to DePaul.
The last time Louisville and Marquette met was on March 26 when the Cards stole a 4-3 victory over the Golden Eagles after Louisville's Rebecca Shine won a three-set marathon over Marquette's Olga Fischer.
The Golden Eagles finished the dual season 17-9 overall. Marquette has faced 10 BIG EAST teams in dual play, tallying wins over Seton Hall, Rutgers, Cincinnati, Connecticut, West Virginia and Providence. Last season, Marquette finished tied for fifth place after it defeated Connecticut and fell to Syracuse.
The Cards fell to No.3 seed DePaul 4-0 in the second round in the 2010 BIG EAST Championships.
Wet, cold weather on the campus of Notre Dame has altered the schedules from the first day of competition. Visit www.bigeast.org for updates.
