The University of Louisville women's team was not able to overcome the No. 44-ranked Long Beach State women's tennis team, which extended its winning streak to three straight matches, defeating the Cardinals 5-2 Thursday in Long Beach, Calif.
The Cardinals started the day by dropping the doubles point. Sarah Cantlay and Julie Luzar got the action started with an 8-2 win over U of L's Mandy Brown and Gabrielle Duncan at No. 3, while Jaklin Alawi and Rachel Manasse sealed the point with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. At No. 1, Anais Dallara and Klaudia Malenovska then wrapped up the sweep of doubles by rallying from an early deficit to defeat Julia Fellerhoff and Becca Shine 8-5.
In singles, U of L scored their points in the top of the lineup as LBSU players dropped two three-set matches as Becca Shine beat Deborah Armstrong 6-4, 1-6, 10-4. At No. 1, Cardinal Julia Fellerhoff wore down Anais Dallara in a battle in the tiebreak, winning a 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 decision. The Cardinals were no match for the 49ers' depth which played a key role as Long Beach State won in the bottom half of the lineup. Sarah Cantlay dropped just a single game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Duncan at No. 6, while Jaklin Alawi was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 4 singles over Kaysara Mandry. Rachel Manasse defeated Amelia Harris 6-1, 6-2 to round out the bottom half of the lineup. Klaudia Malenovska helped clinch the win with a 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles over Mandy Brown .
