AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Louisville rowing team opened its 2011 spring season with four races on day one of the three-day Longhorn Invitational on Friday afternoon.
The Cardinals dropped all four races against the host Longhorns on a sunny day at Lady Bird Lake. Crews raced into a strong headwind and gusty winds throughout the afternoon.
"The Longhorn Invitational is a great regatta because there are a variety of conditions and competitors that allow us to see where there are holes in our race plan execution," said Louisville head coach Laura Aubrey. "The back-to-back races provide us with the opportunity to make immediate changes and see the benefits of those changes.
"There's no question there is disappointment in the results today. There were a few things we did not manage well inside the boat in addition to letting the outside conditions get the best of us. I know we can rebound and we look forward to learning from today's performances to allow us to find speed throughout the remainder of the weekend."
Louisville's varsity eight boat covered the course in a time of 7 minutes, 32.8 second, while Texas earned the win at 7:15.1. U of L's second varsity eight crew finished with a time of 7:52.0, while UT led the way with a time of 7:30.1.
Louisville's varsity four boat closed with a time of 8:50.3, while Texas finished in a time of 8:21.9 for the win. In the second varsity four race, the Cardinals had a time of 8:25.3 to trail the Longhorns' time of 7:59.1.
Louisville will continue the Longhorn Invitational on Saturday with morning races against Kansas State and afternoon races against Oklahoma. The Cardinals will conclude the event on Sunday morning with races against Wisconsin.
