
Women's Tennis Beats BIG EAST Rival Rutgers

The University of Louisville women's tennis team took the doubles point and then held off a tenacious Rutgers team for a 4-3 BIG EAST win Saturday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"Hey, it feels good to be on the right side of a 4-3 win," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham, whose young team has dropped three 4-3 matches this season. " And it feels good not just in terms of getting a win, but beating a good Rutgers team. This win is going to pay off by helping us get a better seed in the conference tournament and it is all about matchups. I feel like the win positions us to be matched up much better in the conference tournament." The Cardinals won two of the three doubles matches for the doubles point with the No. 33 ranked Julia Fellerhoff and Rebecca Shine handling Amy Zhang and and Jenifer Holzberg 8-1 at No. 1. Stefanie Villajuan and Amelia Harris clinched the point at No. 2 with a 8-1 win over Morgan Ivey and Leonora Slatnick.
Up 1-0 going into singles, Rebecca Shine put the first singles point on the board, rolling 6-4, 6-2 over Morgan Ivey at No. 3. Gabrielle Duncan made the score 3-0 with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 6.
Then things got interesting ,as Jenifer Holzberg beat Mandy Brown 6-5, 7-6 (5) at No. 2 to make it 3-1 and with two other matches going into tiebreakers, it was Julia Fellerhoff at No .1 who clinched the match with a timely three-set (6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3) win at No. 1. Amelia Harris was edged at No. 5, 6-7, 6-3 and Kaysara Mandry fell 7-6 (8), 3-6, 1-0 at No. 4.
