The University of Louisville women's tennis team swept the doubles point and then won all six singles points, with five of the six coming in straight sets for the 7-0 win over North Texas Sunday morning at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"We got two wins this weekend and it is very good to beat the Sun Belt champion. That is a good win not just because it is a quality win for us, but because NTSU is going to beat a lot of good teams throughout the rest of the year. That should help us make our way into the national rankings."
The Cardinals' Mandy Brown and Gabrielle Duncan won the No. 3 doubles slot over Isabel Bos and Carolina Barboza 8-3. The No. 2 pair of Stefanie Villajuan and Amelia Harris finished of North Texas' Nadia Lee and Amy Joubert 8-5 to clinch the doubles point. At No. 1, No. 33-ranked Julia Fellerhoff and Rebecca Shine held on to win 8-6 over Irina Paraschiv and Barbora Vykydelova after a lengthy injury delay for Paraschiv.
"Mandy Brown and Amelia Harris, my two captains, led us and won both their doubles and singles matches," said Beckham. "They showed a lot of leadership this whole weekend."
Parachiv was unable to continue after doubles play, so the Mean Green had to forfeit the No. 6 spot and move the rest of the team up one slot and giving U of L a 2-0 before singles play even started. The Cardinals won in straight sets with Amelia Harris clinching the match with a 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 5. Kaysara Mandry actually won the first singles point that was actually played out with a 6-1, 6-3 win. At No. 4., Mandy Brown finished after the clinch with a 7-5, 6-2 win. Rebecca Shinewon 7-5. 6-1 and at No. 1, Julia Fellerhoff outlasted Vykydelova in the only three setter of the match.
The Cardinals return to action March 4 when they travel to Ohio State and then stop on the way home to face BIG EAST rival Cincinnati on March 4 in Cincinnati.
