
Women's Basketball Defeats South Florida 66-55

Tampa, Fla. - The Louisville women's basketball team rebounded from a poor shooting performance earlier in the week to defeat South Florida 66-55 Saturday afternoon in the Sun Dome. Junior Monique Reid led the Cardinals with 27 points while Shoni Schimmel added 16 points and nine assists. Andrea Smith led South Florida with 16 points. The Cardinals improve to 17-10 on the year and 8-5 in the BIG EAST. South Florida falls to 10-17 on the year and 1-12 in league play.
South Florida jumped out to a 3-2 lead to start the game. The Cardinals used a 5-0 run to go up 7-3 after a 3-pointer from Becky Burke with 13:45 left in the first half. The Bulls responded with a 4-0 run to tie the game at the 12:11 mark. The game stayed close until the Cards used a 7-0 run to take a 19-11 lead with just over eight minutes remaining.
Jasmine Wynne broke the scoring drought for USF on the next possession. Louisville responded with a 5-0 run to take a 24-13 lead at the 4:18 mark. Schimmel's deep 3-pointer at the 2:58 mark put Louisville up 29-15. The Bulls finished out the final 2:30 with an 8-1 run to cut the lead to 30-23 at the break.
Louisville finished the first half shooting 52.4 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc. USF shot 39.3 percent from the field and went 0-for-3 from behind the arc. Both teams finished the half with 15 rebounds.
The Cardinals led 43-32 after a layup from Reid with 14:38 remaining. Reid scored 11 of the Cards' first 13 points in the second half. The Bulls cut the lead to 49-42 after a layup from Andrea Smith at the 12:17 mark. Tia Gibbs nailed a trey from the right side and Reid scored on a layup to give Louisville a 54-43 lead with just over eight minutes remaining.
Louisville continued to build on the lead taking a 62-47 lead after a layup from Keshia Hines with 4:23 remaining. USF used a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 11 with 2:30 remaining. Reid scored on a layup to push the lead back to 13 at the 1:46 mark. The Bulls scored on the next possession cut the Louisville lead to 11 but could never get any closer.
Louisville finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the arc, while USF shot 37.9 percent from the field and went 0-for-5 from behind the arc. The Bulls outrebounded the Cardinals 38-27. The Cardinals turned 22 USF turnovers into 22 points.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 23 as they host No. 10/11 DePaul in the KFC Yum! Center at 7:00 p.m.
