Coach Walz Postgame Interview
Louisville, Ky. (AP) - The Cardinals gave coach Jeff Walz his 100th career win at Louisville as the No. 11 Cardinals wore down Austin Peay in the second half to win 78-60 Tuesday.
Monique Reid returned from a back injury to lead Louisville (3-1) with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Becky Burke added 15, and Bria Smith had 13. Shoni Schimmel was the fourth Cardinal in double figures with 10 points and nine assists, while Cierra Warren scored eight and had 11 rebounds.
Freshman Kristen Stainback paced the Governors (2-1) with 15 points and was 4-of-8 on three-point attempts. Whitney Hanley added 12 points and six rebounds.
Stainback hit a three from the top of the key with 16:45 left in the second half to tie the game at 36. But Louisville answered 15 seconds later with a Burke three, sparking a 24-9 run during the next six minutes as the Cardinals slowly pulled away.
Reid, a two-time All-BIG EAST selection who missed the past three games with a back injury, scored 10 straight points following the Burke three to give Louisville a 49-40 lead with 14:10 to play.
"If we could take Monique Reid out of the equation - if she did not have to her homecoming and her return in our game - maybe it would have been a different outcome," Austin Peay coach Carrie Daniels said.
Reid logged 16 minutes as Walz looked to slowly work her back into the rotation.
"I'm fine. I'm hurting a little bit, of course. I'm going to have to play with some pain, but I'm just glad to be back," Reid said.
Walz said he would look to keep Reid on the floor between 18-25 minutes when Louisville travels to Florida State for a 7 p.m. tip Friday.
"I thought she did a really nice job for us and did not look tentative at all out there. (She) got fouled hard and got up and knocked down two free throws," Walz said of his senior forward who has led the Cardinals in scoring the past two seasons.
Austin Peay closed the lead to 64-53 with 6:23 to play, but Louisville finished the game on a 14-7 run.
Although Walz said his team did not defend well he was impressed with Governors' game plan.
"They did a really good job in trying to attack us and trying to spread us out. With our size, that is way you can combat it," Walz said. "If you don't have 6-3, 6-4 players you need to spread us out and drive and try to kick."
Walz is now 100-47 in five seasons at Louisville. He took the Cardinals to the national title game in 2009.
