Louisville Head coach Jeff Walz Quotes
(About Monique Reid being back) "Well my goal was to have her play between 10 and 18 minutes depending on how she felt. I was hoping we would come out and play a lot better from the tip. But I was very pleased about how she played. She played hard. She finished around the basket. She was 7 for 10 and missed a layup in the first half. But I thought she did a really nice job for us and did not look tentative at all out there. Got fouled hard and got up and knocked down two free throws. I was really pleased with the way she performed. I was pleased with the way Cierra Warren played. I thought Cierra played well. She had 11 boards for us. I've just got to get her to make sure she plays hard out there when she is out there on the floor. "
(About the seniors play) "They played well. When we actually pass the ball well, we are good. When we don't look where we are throwing and have half-hearted passes, it turns into an ugly basketball game. It is a lot easier to score when somebody is not guarding. There will be somebody on the wing and we will hold on to the ball until they are guarded and then throw it to them. We just have to learn to get the ball out of our hands and to the open man. We did that during that stretch in the second half. I thought offensively, that is when we looked good."
(About Monique's Injury) "It is a lower back, a sore back. We've gone through all the tests and the MRIs and x-rays and everything comes up clean. We will just gradually progress her back into more playing and practicing. But it is not something that we will throw her back into practicing for two hours. So we will take our time and hopefully she will be feeling good on Friday and go out and play between 18-25 minutes on Friday."
(On APSU's shooting) "I thought they shot the ball well. We didn't do a very good job defending. If you can't keep someone in front of you then someone always has to help and that is our problem right now. We are just not taking pride in getting down and guarding the ball. We are always looking for help and asking for help and you can't do that because then you are going to expose someone else. They did a great job. They dribble drove the ball well and we'd suck in because we got beat and they'd kick out to a shooter and knocked out some threes."
(On APSU 3-point shooting) "They really had not shot the three very well in the first two games, so they came out and Stainback goes for four of eight and I think she had made one three in the first two games. So I think they did a really good job in trying to attack us and trying to spread us out. With our size, that is way you can combat it. If you don't have 6-3, 6-4 you need to spread us out and drive and try to kick. They made some shots early. I think they made the first two threes. So all of a sudden, they are up six-zip and they've got some excitement and then they are playing well. We kind of got put on our heels."
(On his 100th win) "It is one more than 99 and one less than 101. I don't keep track of the number but they are important because if you don't get enough you lose your job. So it is nice to get a bunch of them. But I haven't made a shot in the five years that I have been here. I have been fortunate enough to coach really good players. I have had some really good teams that have bought into the way we do things. We try to play hard. We try and get in here and not just teach basketball but teach them about life. Things aren't always fair and that is what we try to get them to understand that when you walk out on the floor things aren't always going to be fair. You have to be prepared to face adversity. We have been very fortunate to do that. I have Stephanie Norman and Michelle Clark Heard, two of my assistants that have been here all five years, and I am fortunate to have a great staff as well."
(On Burke's all around game) "She is starting to realize that in order for us to really be as good as I think we can, she is going to have to step up. With Tia Gibbs out, that is someone who is a very vocal player for us - very good on the defensive end and kind of got things calmed down. I think Becky has realized that she will have to step up her game some and not just be a shooter for us. She is really directing things to the defensive end. She had two assists and one turnover and it should have been three assists and no turnovers. But she trips over the ball that she is bringing up the floor on a two-on-one fastbreak. So I was very pleased with the way she played. She is in great shape, so I never had to worry about her being tired. It is encouraging as a coach to know that you have someone to go out there and play that hard all the time."
Austin Peay Head Coach Carrie Daniels
(On shooting the ball well) "We knew going into this game for us to be competitive and successful we were going to have to come out and knock down shots. Any time you play a team the caliber of Louisville, that's what you have to do. With their defense, the pressure, the different types looks they give you, we were going have to knock down shots. We did a good job of that early in the first half, if we could take Monique Reid out of that equation and she didn't have to have her homecoming and her return in our game, maybe it would have been a different outcome. You have to give her credit with the injury and what she has endured, for her to come in and do what she does, she's just a great player."
(On why Reid was successful) "A couple of different things, transition defense is something we stressed a lot this week coming into this game. We know that is something that Louisville likes to do, they like to push the ball and get it up the floor and look for transition baskets. The other thing is not allowing that low post look, not getting buried and not getting behind that post player down low. Those are two things we didn't do very well. We allowed them position, instead of getting around and not taking away that pass.
(Was it a breakout game for Kristen Stainback) "I don't know if I would call it a breakout game. Kristen is very capable of this on any given night. She had a very great exhibition for us, the first two games obviously she didn't fair as well. It is no surprise to any of us on the team. Maybe to some others out there but not to anyone familiar with Kentucky basketball because they know a lot about Kristen Stainback. I think she is definitely going to have more games like this."
(On Whitney Hanley) "Whitney has been a constant. I heard from a very great coach at one point in time, that you have to have a couple constants to be a good team and Whitney has been one of those for us so far this year. There is no doubt that this will continue, this is her senior year and I think she has taken this team on her shoulders and said let's go. She can score in a multiple of ways, she can shoot the three, she can take it off the dribble, the pull-up jumper, she can rebound, she can defend, a lot of times we will put her on that tough assignment. She is hungry and she wants it, last year was bittersweet for us and she wants to go out on top. She has worked her tail off in the summer so she could have a good senior year."
(What do you take away from this game) "I think that we always schedule tough nonconference to help us. To get us ready for our conference schedule. All around from top to bottom, to go against the defensive pressure that Louisville brings is only going to help us in what we have to do on the offensive end of the floor. Handling that pressure on the defensive end and getting back in transition and going against the length and athleticism that Louisville brings is going to help us. These are the types of teams that if we are fortunate to ever win, I have always said these are the type of teams you are going to face in the NCAA Tournament. That is why we do this, we will take this today and I told them that we have to learn from it. It doesn't help if we don't take this and learn from it and continue to improve each and every day."
