Louisville, Ky. - Sophomore guard Charmaine Tay has been ruled academically ineligible this semester for not meeting the NCAA academic requirements for freshmen head coach Jeff Walz announced today.
Tay has been able to practice with the team during the fall semester. She can become eligible for the entire BIG EAST campaign and any postseason competition if she meets NCAA requirements following the completion of the fall semester.
A 5-11 sophomore guard from Irvington, N.J., Tay saw action in 30 games last season averaging 3.4 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. She gave the Cardinals a big lift off the bench during the postseason. Tay scored a career-high 11 points against Xavier in the NCAA Tournament.
"This is disappointing for all of us, including Charmaine," said Walz. "She has fallen short on her academic responsibilities and is aware of what needs to be done in order to improve her academic standing with the university and our basketball program. At the same time, we feel that this could be a positive learning experience for her."
The Cardinals' season opener is slated for Nov. 13 at Missouri State with a 3:05 p.m. tipoff.
