LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Monique Reid scored 24 points, Becky Burke added 21 and Louisville upset No. 18 St. John's 84-73 on Tuesday night at the KFC Yum! Center. The Cardinals (11-5, 2-0 BIG EAST) forced the Red Storm (12-3, 1-1) into a season-high 23 turnovers to knock off a ranked team for the third time this season.
Tia Gibbs added 18 points and 10 rebounds and freshman point guard Shoni Schimmel had 11 points and 11 assists for Louisville, which took control in the first half and never let the Red Storm get closer than five over the game's final 25 minutes. Shenneika Smith led St. John's with 23 points and Eugeneia McPherson had 15 points and four rebounds.
The Cards forced 23 turnovers and hit 31-of-66 shots, including 10-of-23 on 3-pointers. St. John's was 3-of-11 from three-point range.
Burke finished the first half with three 3-pointers and Gibbs finished with two to give the Cardinals a 36-27 lead at the break.
The Red Storm hit just two of its first nine shots in the second half as the Cardinal lead grew to 45-33. But the visitors made several runs. The first cut it to 50-41 before Schimmel answered with a 27-foot 3-pointer .
Burke's 3-pointer and a driving layup by Reid gave the Cards a cushion before Da'Shena Stevens scored back-to-back baskets to cut it to 62-53. Then Gibbs answered with the shot clock winding down, drilling a 3-pointer from about 25 feet at the top of the key to make it 65-53.
Gibbs hit another jumper before Reid made 2 of 4 free throws to make it 69-58 with 3:17 left. Sky Lindsay made a free throw and Nadirah McKenith came up with a steal and layup to pull St. John's within 69-61. Schimmel then found Reid for a bucket before McKenith scored again. Reid missed the front end of a one-and-one, and McKenith scored again to make it 71-65 with 1:50 left.
On the next possession Schimmel broke free from a trapping defense and found Sheronne Vails for a layup. The teams traded free throws before Eugeneia McPherson's 3-pointer with 52.2 seconds left cut the Louisville lead to 75-70.
Schimmel hit four free throws, and after a long rebound she took it the length of the floor and fed Reid with a no-look pass for what turned into a three-point play. Burke's two free throws with 12 seconds ended it.
