TEAM
- Louisville improves to 6-2 all-time against St. John's, bouncing back nicely from last year's 91-56 defeat at the hands of the Red Storm. Louisville has now scored 80+ points in four of its six wins over St. John's.
- The 11-point victory was the smallest for any team in the series.
- U of L improves to 5-1 all-time in BIG EAST home openers and has won three straight since losing 82-74 to #14/14 Notre Dame on Jan. 8, 2008.
- The Red Storm did not miss a shot until the 14:06 mark of the first half, starting the game 3-for-3, but led just 9-8 at that point thanks to seven turnovers during that stretch. St. John's shot 50.0 percent (9-for-18) from the floor in the first half but committed 17 turnovers in the frame and trailed by nine at the break.
- It marked the first time since Dec. 18, 2003, that the Cardinals held at halftime lead despite allowing their opponent to shoot 50.0 or better in the first half. In that game, U of L led Cleveland State 39-36 at the break despite the Vikings' 55.2 percent (16-for-29) shooting.
- Louisville has now forced all five of its ranked opponents this season into at least 21 turnovers (average of 24.2 per game). St. John's finished with 23 in the game, its most since turning the ball over 24 times at Monmouth on Nov. 28, 2007.
- Since falling to a pair of top-10 foes in Tennessee (#4/4) and Xavier (#5/5), the Cards have now defeated three straight ranked opponents. Louisville has not won four consecutive games over top-25 opponents since at least the 1994-95 season.
Most consecutive wins over ranked opponents, since 1995-96
1. 3 - 12.5.10-Present (#8/9 Kentucky, #21 Nebraska, #18/18 St. John's)
1. 3 - 3.28.09-4.5.09 (#5/5 Baylor, #3/3 Maryland, #4/4 Oklahoma)
1. 3 - 2.11.09-3.9.09 (#22/22 Notre Dame, #15/20 Pittsburgh, #14/19 Pittsburgh)
- The combined victory margin in the three wins over ranked opponents is 51, with all three wins coming by at least 11 points.
- The Cardinals put together another 10-three game on Tuesday, hitting 10-of-23 from beyond the arc. The Cardinals now have five games with 10 or more threes this season, matching--in just 16 games--Louisville's total from the previous four seasons combined. The five games with 10 or more threes already ties for the most by a Cardinal club since 2000-01 (also five in 2003-04).
- St. John's came into the game allowing just 51.7 points per game (11th in the country), but gave up 84 to U of L, the highest total for a Red Storm opponent since Feb. 17, 2009, when Louisville defeated St. John's 89-60.
PLAYER
- Sophomore Tia Gibbs set a new career high with 18 points in the game, besting her previous career mark of 15 (set on Dec. 22, 2008, against Liberty while playing for Vanderbilt). She also tied a career high with four three-pointers made (six attempts), a mark she also achieved on March 8, 2009, against Auburn (4-for-8). Gibbs also set new career bests in field goals made (seven), field goal attempts (13), and blocks (two).
- Gibbs recorded her first career double-double in the contest, also tying a career-high with 10 rebounds. It was the second 10-rebound game of Gibbs' career (also had 10 at Xavier on Nov. 23).
- Gibbs has now scored in double figures in four straight games (12.8 points per game over that stretch), a career-long streak for the guard.
- Freshman Shoni Schimmel dished out 11 more assists in the contest, her second consecutive 10-assist game. She has 23 assists over the last two games, the highest two-game assist total for a Cardinal since Patrika Barlow had 24 in the first two games of the 2007-08 season (16 against Ball State and eight versus Western Carolina).
- Schimmel becomes the first Louisville player with back-to-back 10-assist games since Sara Nord had 10 against Kentucky on Jan. 5, 2003, and 12 against Columbia two days later.
- With 11 points, Schimmel secured her second consecutive double-double with points and assists.
- Schimmel hit one three in the contest, the first time in 10 games she had not hit at least two threes. Her nine-game streak with multiple threes was the longest by a BIG EAST player since the Red Storm's Kelly McManmon hit two or more threes in 10 straight from Jan. 5-Feb. 10 of last season. It was the longest streak of multiple-three outings by a Cardinal since Sara Nord hit two or more treys in 10 straight games from Jan. 16-Feb. 20, 2004.
