The University of Louisville women's tennis team took the doubles point and then swept all six singles to beat BIG EAST rival West Virginia 7-0 Sunday morning at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals are now 2-0 in dual matches and have an evening match ahead with intrastate rival Morehead State at 4 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd.
"It is always good to win within the conference because it definitely carries seeding weight for the tournament," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "Outside of the win, I thought we played a level better than we did on Friday. We got rid of our first match jitters and now we can build momentum and help progress every match."
The No. 33-ranked doubles team of Mandy Brown and Julia Fellerhoff made quick work of WVU's Mary Chupa and Veronica Cardenas with a 8-3 win at No. 1. Next to finish was Sarah Miller and Becca Shine, who paired to beat Liv Pettersson and Ashley Pilsbury 8-2 at No. 3. Although the doubles point was already decided, Stefanie Villajuan and Amelia Harris pulled out a gritty 8-7 (7-2) win.
Fellerhoff dispatched Tanik 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 for the first singles point. Sarah Miller won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 for the third point and Becca Shine clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Cardenas.
Sonia Bokhari won easily at No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-2 over Chupa. Gabi Duncan had a stiff challenge in the first set at No. 6 from Pettersson but won 6-4 and then rolled 6-0 in the second set.
