The University of Louisville women's tennis team won three 3-set matches and took the doubles point to sweep visiting Bowling Green State 7-0 in the season opening match Friday morning at the Bass Rudd Tennis Center.
"It was a good win today," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "If you just looked at the score on paper it looked like we had an easy time but, in fact, we had to win three 3-setters. BGSU gave us a good challenge for our first match."
U of L took two of the three doubles matches led by Mandy Brown and Julia Fellerhoff's 8-4 win at No. 1. The pair of Sarah Miller and Becca Shine beat Mary Hill and Katie Grubb 8-6 at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point.
"We came out a big sluggish but as soon as we got rid of our nerves, we were able to execute at crucial times to win the match 7-0," said Beckham.
Fellerhoff set the tone in singles by beating BGSU's top player and senior leader Christine Chiricosta 6-0, 7-5. The match was clinched by No. 5 singles player Sonia Bokhari, who rolled over Maddy Eccleston 6-4, 6-2.
