LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In just the first day of competition at the Gladstein Invitational on Friday evening, the University of Louisville men's and women's track teams had 13 athletes register BIG EAST indoor qualifying marks at the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse.
Leading the way for the squads were the distance runners, as Kim Grieshaber took first in the women's 3,000m run with a time of 9:52.33, breaking her previous career-best mark of 9:57.15. Monica Hernandez took second in the event, breaking her previous best by four seconds.
On the men's side, freshman Tyler Byrne, competing in his first track meet of the season, finished third in the 3,000m run, with a time of 8:24.31. He finished less than a second after the No. 2 finisher - an unattached runner - and behind Andy Bayer, who ran a world-leading time of 7:48.35. Luke Lovelace, who was competing for the event for the first time this season, finished in fifth.
In the other track events, Saravia Richardson, Margret Harris and Ahlivia Spencer posted impressive finishes. Racing in the 60m preliminaries, Richardson placed second, while Harris finished in fourth. The duo qualified for the finals, which are set to take place on Saturday, Jan. 23, at 11:35 a.m. Spencer, meanwhile, finished third in the 400m after not having competed in the event this season.
In the field events, eight athletes placed in the top five in their respective events.
Megan Schubert tied a career-best mark in the high jump, clearing 1.76m/5-9.25 for a second-place showing, while Michelle Theophille, who also matched a career best with a jump of 1.71m/5-7.25, finished No. 3. In the triple jump, Charachesicia Lockhart and Maggie Gilbertson finished Nos. 4-5, respectively.
