
Lady Hammer Throwers Advance to Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of Louisville women throwers competed Friday in the hammer throw on day two of the 2010 NCAA East Regional Track and Field Meet hosted by North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The Lady Cardinals have been one of the best throwing squads in the nation this season. On Friday, they did not disappoint.
Senior Jere' Summers placed third out of 48 competitors with the top 12 advancing to the national championships. Summers fouled on five out of six attempts but her second attempt was good for a third-place throw of 201-04 (61.38m). Summers entered the meet with the fourth-best throw in the East Region this season of 207-04 (63.20m). Summers, an Oakland, Calif. native, will compete tomorrow in the discus on the final day of competition.
Senior Lindsey Cook placed fifth in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 192-10 (58.79m). Cook completed all of her throws with her six and final attempt being her best. Cook, who is from Borden, Ind., finished third in the hammer at the 2010 BIG EAST Championships and has really had a great senior season.
Junior D'Ana McCarty placed tenth in the hammer throw with a heave of 186-07 (56.87m). McCarty fouled on three out of six attempts with her third attempt being her best. McCarty will join Summers on Saturday to compete in the women's discus. All three throwers will advance to the national championships in the hammer throw in Eugene, Ore. on June 9-12.
The final day of the meet will commence Saturday at 9:30 a.m. (E.T.) with the men's discus throw and 3,000m steeplechase and will conclude at 9:45 p.m. with the women's 1,600m relay.
Competing on the final day for the Cardinals will be junior Josh Greenwald (men's discus); seniors Andre Black and Michael Johnson, Jr. (men's triple jump); junior Matt Hughes (men's 3,000m steeplechase); senior Jere' Summers and junior D'Ana McCarty (women's discus). The regional is one of two qualifying events for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships that will be held on June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore.
