
Track and Field Closes Out Season Strong at Cardinal Twilight

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's and women's track and field teams won eight event titles as they completed the regular season in solid fashion Friday evening at the Cardinal Twilight.
"I think it was a great meet for us we had several people who had marked improvements," said U of L head coach Ron Mann. "Each year it keeps getting bigger and now the quality of competition is way up."
On the women's side, the cards won five events and were led by senior Jere' Summers. She placed second in the discuss to an unattached competitor but put up the best mark in the East Region and the second-best mark in school history in the discus with her toss of 187-05 (57.21m). Summers also won the hammer throw where the cards dominated the competition by placing first, second and third. Summers won with a mark of 203-08 (62.09m).
Junior D'Ana McCarty won the women's shot put with a mark of 51-09.75 (15.79m). Freshman Chelsea Brown won the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.44. Junior Kim Grieshaber won the 5,000m run in a time of 17:01.62.
Senior Caitlin Cunningham won the women's 1,500m with a time of 4:31.86. Senior Kat Alcorn finished second in the women's 800m run with a mark of 2:11.22. Senior Chiamaka Omenyinma placed second in the long jump (19-03.50/5.88m), while sophomore Charachesicia Lockhart finished second in the triple jump (39-06.50/12.05m).
On the men's side, senior Steven Hnat broke his own school record for the third time this season with a heave of 62-06.75 (19.07m). The mark currently ranks second in the East Region.
Junior Matt Hughes won the men's 1,500m with the third-best time in school history of 3:47.64. Senior Michael Johnson won the triple jump 50-10.00 (15.49m). Freshman Howard Shepard III placed second in the 800m run with a personal-best time of 1:49.63.
"Now it's a matter of final touches training wise before we go into the first round of NCAA's," said Mann.
The Cards will have a week off to prepare for the 2010 NCAA East Regional Championships on May 28-29 which will be held in Greensboro, N.C. The regional is one of two qualifying events for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships that will be held on June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore.
