LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's and women's track and field teams will host the first of three meets at Cardinal Park this weekend with the Border Battle "Kentuckiana".
The Border Battle "Kentuckiana" will be a dual-scored meet that will feature the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky teaming up to compete against Indiana University and Notre Dame.
"We have arguably the best of the Big Ten, the best of the BIG EAST and the best of the SEC all at one location at the same time" said U of L Head Coach Ron Mann. "We wanted to create something that would make the public want to not only come, but come back. We want to bring meets to the area that are going to be marketable, enjoyable and competitive. This exemplifies exactly what we are trying to do."
U of L is coming off an impressive meet at the Purdue Mike Poehlein Invitational on April 2-3 where they won five events and set a new school record in the women's hammer throw.
The Cardinal women were led by senior Jere' Summers who dominated the 51-person field in the hammer throw with a first-place, school-record toss of 207-04 (63.20m). Summers now holds the women's record in the outdoor hammer throw, shot put and the discus as well as the indoor shot put. She also holds four of the top-five hammer throws in UofL history. Summers then followed with a win in the discus with a throw of 174-09 (53.26m).
The Cardinal men were led by senior Steven Hnat, who crushed his previous shot put school record with a heave of 60-10.75 (18.56m).
"This is being scheduled as a dual-meet. Hoosier land, the state of Indiana, which is Indiana University and Notre Dame, will be scored on one team against the commonwealth. It is a unique concept in that the Cardinals and the Wildcats are going head-to-head against "Hoosier land" rather than trying to beat up on each other. It is a unique concept and I think the fans will really enjoy it" said Coach Mann.
Action is set to start Saturday at 10:30 a.m. (ET) in the field events with the men's javelin, while the running events will follow at 2:00 p.m. and conclude with the men's 4x400m relay at 5:05 p.m. tentatively. Live results will be available at www.uoflsports.com.
The Cardinals will be back in action as they host the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational, which will take place next Friday, April 16. The Cards will then hold the Cardinal Twilight on May 14.
