
Women's Basketball Falls to Pittsburgh 72-69

The University of Louisville women's basketball team lost a 72-69 heartbreaker at Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon at the Peterson Events Center. Four Cardinals scored in double figures with Monique Reid leading the way with 20 points. Keshia Hines recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. While Becky Burke finished with 15 points and Shelby Harper added 11 points and a career-high nine assists. Brittaney Thomas led the Panthers with 22 points.
The Panthers took a five point lead to start the second half but the Cardinals went on a 4-0 run to cut the lead to one. The Panthers led until Harper nailed a 3-pointer at the 16:13 mark to give Louisville a 42-41 lead.
The game stayed within four points until Harper drove in for a layup to cut the lead to 55-54 with eight minutes remaining. A 3-pointer by Thomas at the 5:17 mark gave the Panthers a 63-58 lead. Reid scored a layup on the next play to cut the lead to three but Cole's two free throws pushed the Pitt lead up to five again.
Burke's 3-pointer at the 2:53 mark cut the lead to 66-65. Pitt's Thomas scored on a jumper to take a three point lead. Hines scored a layup with 1:07 remaining to get the Cardinals within one (68-67). The Panthers hit 4 of 6 from the line in the final minute to seal the win.
Louisville finished the game shooting 44.3 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from the 3-point line. While Pittsburgh shot 46.6 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc. The Cardinals outrebounded the Panthers 38-30 and had a season-high 18 assists.
The first half was tightly contested with five ties and four lead changes. Pittsburgh went on a 6-0 run to take a 23-29 lead with 3:00 minutes remaining in the half. Louisville finished the half with an 8-5 run to cut the lead to 34-31 at the break.
Burke led the Cardinal in the first half with 10 points and Hines added nine point and four rebounds in the half. Sims Led Pitt with 11 points. Louisville finished the first half shooting 36.7 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from behind the arc. The Panthers finished the half shooting 45.5 percent from the field and 75 percent from the 3-point line. Pittsburgh held a slight 20-19 rebounding advantage over the Cardinals.
Louisville will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 16 as they host Marquette in Freedom Hall at 7:00 p.m.
