LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville track and field program will cross the cold Ohio River to travel to Bloomington, Ind. for the Hoosier Hills Invitational hosted by Indiana University on Friday.
The Hoosier Hills Invitational will have some great competition with over 800 athletes registered. The one-day meet will be held in the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse and will commence at 5 p.m. ET on Friday with the long jump and 60m hurdles. The invitational concludes with the men's 4x400-meter relay tentatively set for 11:45 p.m.
U of L had a great meet last weekend at the Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame. The Cardinals posted three NCAA automatic qualifying marks, 10 NCAA provisional qualifying marks, set two school records while winning five events in the process. The No.12 ranked women's team was led by junior thrower D'Ana McCarty and senior thrower Jere' Summers. Both athletes are ranked in the top of the NCAA.
McCarty is ranked No. 1 in the weight throw with an astounding 73'4.5. She is ranked 24th in the shot put. On Tuesday, McCarty was announced as the BIG EAST Female Field Athlete of the Week. McCarty threw 73-4.5 at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational on Feb. 5 in Notre Dame, Ind. , topping her own 2009 NCAA Championship-winning weight throw. The NCAA automatic-qualifying throw was accompanied by an NCAA provisional mark in the shot put at 55-11.5.
The Cardinal men are looking to get their last "warm up" before the BIG EAST Championships. They will be led by seniors Tone Belt and Andre Black. The men's jumping group has become one of the toughest, most competitive jumping groups in the NCAA this season.
Belt was named the BIG EAST Male Field Athlete of the Week after he took first-place in the long jump at the Meyo Invitational, posting a distance of 25'6.25 which is the seventh-best mark in the country. He also placed fourth in the high jump with a height of 7-00.25. Both met NCAA provisional-qualifying standards.
After finishing the Hoosier Hills Invitational, the Cards will travel to the "Big Apple" to compete in the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Feb. 20-21.
