
Women's Basketball Hands UT Martin a 92-67 Defeat

Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's basketball team defeated University of Tennessee-Martin 92-67 on Tuesday evening in the KFC Yum! Center. The Cardinals improve to 10-5 on the season and have scored 90 plus points in a game for the fifth time this season.
Louisville finished with four players in double figures, led by freshman Shoni Schimmel with 24 points, a career high 12 assists and a career high seven steals for her first career double-double. Monique Reid finished with 20 points, while Tia Gibbs scored 11 and Becky Burke knocked down 10 points. The Skyhawks were led in scoring by Heather Butler with 29 points. Jasmine Newsome also scored double figure points with 16 points.
The Cardinals started out the game aggressive on both sides of the ball, causing several turnovers with their press which led to baskets on the offensive end. Louisville got out to an early 4-0 lead in the first minute with Burke getting the first basket off the opening tip.
The Skyhawks got on the board at the 19:00 minute mark as Heather Butler hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 4-3. Louisville responded with an 8-0 run over the next 2:30 minutes with Schimmel and Burke hitting 3-pointers before UT-Martin scored their next basket.
The Cardinals had a 15-0 run over the next five minutes sparked by 3-pointer from Burke. Schimmel and Reid added six points apiece in the run. The Skyhawks finally broke the run at the 11:10 minute mark with two free throws from Butler, making the score 27-7.
After a mini-run from UT-Martin, which saw the Skyhawks score six straight points cutting the lead to 27-11, Louisville went on a 9-0 run extending the lead back out to 36-11, capped off by a basket from Asia Taylor at the eight minute mark.
Both teams would trade baskets back and forth the remainder of the half with the Cardinals leading 50-25 at the break. It was the fifth time this season the Cardinals have scored at least 50 points in a half.
Louisville finished the half shooting 51.2 percent from the floor and 46.2 percent from beyond the arc, while UT-Martin shot 33.3 percent from the floor and 25.0 percent from beyond the arc. The Cardinals outrebounded the Skyhawks 24-20.
The Cardinals started out the second half the same way they started the game, dominating both ends of the court. Louisville came out with a 6-0 run in the first minute and a half, keyed by two baskets from Gibbs to extend the lead to 56-25. The Skyhawks were able to hit three consecutive 3-point baskets, cutting into the Cardinal lead making the score 62-38 at the 14:40 mark.
Both teams traded baskets for most of the half, but UT-Martin continued to keep hitting their 3-point shots as Butler knocked down two on two consecutive possessions at one point. At the 9:25 mark, Taylor Hall knocked down a 3-pointer for the Skyhawks to pull them within 20 (73-53), the closest the score had been since the 8:46 mark in the first half when the score was 31-11.
The Cardinals answered the Skyhawks run with a 7-0 run of their own to extend the score to 80-55, but UT-Martin would not go away easy as they answered back with a 7-0 run of their own. The teams went back and forth the rest of the game with the Cardinals earning a 92-67 victory.
Louisville finished the game shooting 50.0 percent from the floor and 40.0 percent from beyond the arc, while UT-Martin shot 42.1 percent from the floor and 36.4 percent from beyond the arc. The Cardinals out-rebounded the Skyhawks 41-37.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 4 as they host St. John's at the KFC Yum! Center at 7:00 p.m.
