
Women's Basketball Falls to Houston 92-80

Las Vegas, Nev. - The Louisville women's basketball team fell 92-80 to Houston in the second round of the Duel in the Desert on Saturday afternoon at the Cox Pavilion. Monique Reid led three Cardinals in double figures with 27 points. The junior recorded her first double-double of the season, grabbing 10 rebounds. Shoni Schimmel finished with 23 points and Tia Gibbs added 10. Porsche Landry led Houston with 21 points. The Cardinals fall to 8-5 on the year while Houston improves to 8-1.
Once again the Cardinal offense got off to a slow start, the Cougars jumped out to 9-2 lead. Houston built an 11 point lead after Brittney Scott hit a 3-pointer at the 13:56 mark. Schimmel nailed a trey to cut the lead to eight (19-11) but Houston scored on the next possession to go back up 10. A 3-pointer by Gibbs sparked an 11-0 run. Charmaine Tay's 3-pointer at the 10:45 mark gave the Cards their first lead of the game at 22-21.
Houston responded on the next possession and scored 11 straight points to go up 32-25 after a 3-pointer by Jasmine Johnson with eight minutes remaining in the half. Schimmel nailed another trey to spark a 7-0 Cardinal run to knot the game at 32 at the 6:42 mark. The Cougars responded with a 10-0 run of their own to take a 42-32 lead with 4:38 remaining.
Reid converted on a three-point play to cut the lead to 42-35 at the 4:01 mark. Houston finished the half with an 8-2 run to finish the half with a 50-37 lead. Houston finished the half shooting 50 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from behind the arc. The Cardinals shot 42.9 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from behind the arc. Louisville finished with a 21-16 rebounding advantage.
Houston continued its physical play in the second half, building a 25-point lead (87-62) with 5:25 remaining. The Cardinals then went on an 18-3 run to cut it to 10 (90-80) with 1:31 remaining in the game. Houston scored on 2-of-4 from the line as the Cardinals' time ran out.
Louisville finished the game shooting 42.9 percent from the field and 32.1 percent from behind the arc. Houston shot 50 percent from the field and 56.3 percent from behind the arc. The Cardinals shot 60.7 percent from the foul line while Houston shot 72.4 percent. Louisville finished with a 42-34 rebounding advantage.
Reid became a 1,000 point scorer after scoring her 18th point of the night. She becomes the 21st Cardinal to score 1,000 points and the fifth player to reach that milestone in her junior year. Reid finished the night with 1,009 career points.
The Cardinals will wrap up play at the Duel in the Desert Classic on Monday as they face Nebraska at 9:30 p.m. ET.
