LOUISVILLE, Ky. - About the Oklahoma City Challenge
Four captains were selected and teams were drafted to compete against one another in a four-day series of events that tests the athleticism and strategic thinking of the teams. A team champion will be crowned at the end of the OKC Challenge on Tuesday. Sports performance coach Teena Murray oversees the competition, while also motivating her charges to extend themselves to their limits. Coach Murray only gives instructions to the captains who must relay the information to their respective teams. Each day the teams have opportunities to earn higher point values as the OKC Challenge progresses.
The Teams:
Team Red: Alicja Wolny (captain) Jordan Trimble (captain) Tesha Paysen, Colby Wherry, Hannah Kiyohara, Chelsea Jordan, Chrisanna Roberts, Christina Roesel, and Caralisa Connell.
Team White: Katelyn Mann (captain) Chelsea Leonard (captain) Chelsea Bemis, Kristin Austin, Tori Collins, Sarah Anderson, Katie Keller, Taner Fowler, Maggie Ruckenbrod, Jennifer Esteban
Chrisanna Roberts details Day Two of the OKC Challenge
As day two of the Oklahoma City Challenge commenced, both teams again had no idea what to expect. We knew we were going to be outside, so lots of ideas were going through our mind as to what we could be doing. Perhaps sleds on the field hockey field? Or maybe some type of relay race on Teena's newly built immaculate turf hill? We even went as far as thinking maybe we could be doing some type of challenge in the sand pit. All we knew was that we did not want to end up at Papa Johns Stadium.
And so it begins...
When both teams got up to the Marshall Center Teena called the captains over to explain to them what we would be doing for the day. Next thing I know I hear my captains shouting to start running to Papa John's; we had 10 minutes to get there! Oh No! That was definitely the last thing I wanted to be doing today because last time we ran stadiums everyone's calves were sore for days! I'm sure Teena strategically planned it that way so we would have the weekend to hopefully recover.
They call the run to Papa John's a "warm up" however by the time I get there I'm well past warm. As we were running I heard one of my teammates yell out, "Hey here comes the TARC let's hop on." And, I actually considered it for a brief moment.
Stadium Stairs - plus weights
As we all trickle into the stadium I see several weighted vests laying on the ground and two infamous kettle bells. Each team would have to carry four 20 pound weighted vests, and one 44 pound kettle bell combined between nine people. The first team to get their entire team all the way around the stadium with all five items would be the winner. The winning team would receive 200 points so this was a big challenge. Also, the first person to finish the entire stadium would earn 50 extra points for their team.
Here we go...
As the race to the other side of the stadium began it became very clear that getting the kettle bell up and down every step would not be an easy feat. The kettle bell is heavy and very awkward to carry. Trying to manage it while speeding up and down the flights of stairs was definitely challenging.
The Black Team got off to an early lead and kept it the entire race. The Red Team would try and battle back but couldn't quite catch them. The entire Black Team, plus their five items all crossed the finish line at around 44 minutes, while the Red team and their five items finished at around 45 and a half minutes.
On a lighter note for the Red team, Tesha Paysen did a great job and was the first one to complete the entire stadium at a time of around 32 minutes.
The Black Team now leads
As the scoring wrapped up for the day's events the Black Team earned 200 points, while the Red team only earned 50. The competition is getting stiff now as the final combined totals for both teams after both days is Red team 200, Black team 250.
Looking forward to next week
As we all got back to the locker room after today's challenge it was the general consensus that everyone hop in the cold tub to ice our legs in hopes of them not being as sore when we wake up tomorrow. Today's competition was physically challenging and both teams will benefit from having the weekend to recover and get ready for next Monday and Tuesday. With the score so close I can guarantee both teams will be bringing their A-game next week in hopes of being crowned the first annual Oklahoma City Challenge Champions!
