
Women's Basketball Hands Houston Baptist a 100-34 loss

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville women's basketball team defeated Houston Baptist 100-34 on Wednesday evening in the KFC Yum! Center. The Cardinals improve to 2-1 on the season.
Junior Monique Reid and freshman Sheronne Vails paced the team in scoring with 18 points each as the Cardinals finished with five players in double figure scoring. Sophomore Asia Taylor led the team in rebounds with a career-high 10 in the game to go along with nine points. Vails set a new school record with a career-high seven blocks.
Houston Baptist falls to 0-2 on the season. Senior Ernesta Griciunaite led the way for the Huskies in scoring finishing with eight points and three rebounds.
The Cardinals started out the game with offensive flurry as they would open up the first half with a 26-2 run in the opening eight minutes of the game. Houston Baptist scored the first basket of the game as Mele Leasau hit a baseline jumper at the 19:29 mark.
Reid, who scored eight of the team's first 10 points, would answer 20 seconds later with a basket. The Cardinals held the Huskies scoreless for over the next seven minutes before Leasau scored again at the 12:00 mark.
The tempo began to settle after the first flurry of scoring as the team's traded baskets for most of the rest of the half. Neither team was able to string together runs of more than two scores at a time with the half ending with a Cardinal advantage of 57-26.
Louisville finished the half shooting 53.3 percent from the floor, while Houston Baptist shot 43.5 percent. The Cardinals out rebounded the Huskies 24-17 in the half. Reid finished the half leading the Cardinals with 16 points and five rebounds.
The Cardinals started out the second half the same way they started out the game. Louisville came out of the locker room with a 17-0 run to extend their lead to 74-26 at the 12:24 mark.
Houston Baptist didn't score in the second half until the 12:13 mark when Brittany Maxey was able to get a basket ending almost an eight minute drought. Vails' basket at the 11:32 mark sparked a 7-1 run over the next four minutes that saw the Huskies go without a field goal during that stretch.
Louisville finished out the half with another huge run as the Cardinals went on an 18-4 run over the last 8:25 of the game. The Cardinals were able to hold the Huskies to just eight points in the second half, the fewest points allowed in a half in program history.
Louisville finished the game shooting 46.3 percent, while Houston Baptist shot 28.9 percent. The Cardinals out rebounded the Huskies 57-30 in the game. The last time Louisville scored 100 points in a game was on Nov. 12, 2006 against Memphis when the Cardinals won 102-64. The 66-point scoring margin is the third best in program history.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 19 against Southeast Missouri State at 7:00 p.m. in the KFC Yum! Center.
