
Cardinals Fall to Marquette 3-2

Outside hitter Anastasia Artemeva had 14 kills and three blocks but the Cards fell 3-2 to Marquette in BIG EAST volleyball action Friday night in Milwaukee.
U of L fell 25-23, 25-16, 19-25, 19-25, 14-16 and moved to 17-7 and 11-2 in the BIG EAST. Marquette improves to 21-7 and 11-2 in the league. U of L hit .181 and had 13 blocks, led by Gwen Ruckers six. Lola Arslanbekova had 15 kills and 14 digs but hit .021 for the match.
In the first set, U of L popped out to a 5-1 lead early but the Golden Eagles fought back to come within three at 16-13. The Cardinals pushed the spread to five points at 20 and forced an MU timeout. MU's Danielle Carlson led a 5-2 run with three kills and this time it was time for a Cardinal timeout. Amanda Simmons bounced one to go up 23-20 and Lola Arslanbekova had the final two points to give the Cards the 25-23 win. The Cards used .333 hitting to keep the Eagles at arm's length.
In the second set, U of L took a 12-4 lead and by the time the score moved to 17-8, Marquette was out of timeouts. The Cardinals got to set point on a kill by Lola Arslanbekova and then sealed the 2-0 lead with a kill by Amanda Simmons and the 25-16 win. Emily Juhl had six kills in the set.
The Cardinals hitting went cold in set three as they hit .033 and notched just one block. MU used a 6-1 run midway through the set and the Cardinals could not make up the deficit.
The Golden Eagles used a 12-3 run down the stretch to beat the Cardinals 25-19 and force the fifth and deciding set. The Cardinals hit just .027 in that set.
Marquette took an early 10-6 lead but the Cardinals battled back, scoring six of the last nine points, with Anastasia Artemeva scoring four of the Cardinals last five points before the Cards fell 16-14.
U of L travels to Syracuse for a 2 p.m. match on Sunday.
