LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Former University of Louisville standout track and field athletes Rudon Bastian and Wesley Korir are in action this weekend, as both will compete in nationally renowned events.
Bastian, a three-year letterman, is competing at the 2010 Delhi XIX Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India. After competing in the Bahamian National Championships, Bastian was chosen to represent the Bahamas in the long jump. By placing third in men's long jump qualifier, with a 7.64-meter mark, Bastian advances to the finals, which will take place Saturday morning.
"It's a huge step in his career, making the final," assistant coach, who worked with Bastian, Jake Jacoby says. "If he comes out and performs like I know he can tomorrow, he should be on the podium."
A three-year letterwinner, Korir is set to race in the prestigious Bank of America Chicago Marathon, which takes place on Sunday, Oct. 10. The event features runners from all 50 states and more than 100 countries and has been held for more than 30 years, with the first marathon in 1977.
A Kenyan native, Korir was one of the program's top runners in cross country and track and currently is the school record holder in four events (three outdoor and one indoor). He earned all-region cross country honors in 2005 and 2006 and won six individual titles during that span. On the track side, he won the 10K at the 2005 Conference USA Outdoor Championships and qualified for the national championships a year later in the 5K.
