LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville rowing head coach Laura Aubrey has announced the hiring of former University of Dayton head coach Derek Copeland as assistant coach with the Cardinals.
"It is great to have Derek join our Cardinal Family," said Aubrey. "He brings a great deal of excitement and experience to the coaching staff and I know will be an asset to the program's continued success. He has a great rapport with the athletes and will do an excellent job at helping them to reach their full potential during their collegiate rowing careers and beyond. He truly wants the student-athletes to excel within their sport and in life.
"Derek's greatest strength is his ability to take on many things with an exuberant amount of energy and passion. Derek has showed he possesses great skills that make him an invaluable asset to the program. I am thrilled to have him on our team and look forward to a great year of success."
Copeland joins the Cardinals after three seasons as the Flyers' head coach. While in Dayton, he led the Flyers to fourth place finishes at the 2008 and 2009 Atlantic 10 Championships and had eight Flyer rowers earn All-Atlantic 10 Honors during his three-year tenure.
Prior to being named the Flyers' head coach, Copeland served from 2000 to 2006 as head coach of UD's men's club team. A 2000 graduate of the University of Dayton with a degree in business management, Copeland rowed from 1996 to 2000 for the Flyers' club team, which earned Top 15 national rankings in the US Rowing Coaches Poll during his final two seasons.
