
Women's Basketball Falls 76-70 to DePaul in Overtime

Chicago, Ill. - The Louisville women's basketball team fell 76-70 in overtime to DePaul on Tuesday evening in McGrath Arena. Monique Reid led three Cardinals in double figures with 21 points and 14 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. Keshia Hines finished with 20 point and Becky Burke added 16. Keisha Hampton and Sam Quigley led the Blue Demons with 22 points apiece. The Cardinals fall to 9-6 on the season and 1-1 in BIG EAST action while DePaul improves to 12-4 on the season and 1-1 in BIG EAST play.
The game started out close until the Cards opened up a 13-2 run to take a 19-8 lead after back-to-back scores from Burke with 11:39 remaining in the first half. The Blue Demons then responded with an 11-2 run to cut the Cardinal lead to two at the 8:58 mark. DePaul regained a 26-25 lead after a jumper by Hampton at the 5:16 mark. The Blue Demons closed the half with a 28-27 lead.
Louisville started the second half on a 4-0 run led by Reid with two layups. The game remained close until the Blue Demons went on an 8-0 run to take a 62-54 lead with 3:24 remaining. Gwen Rucker nailed a 3-pointer with 2:08 remaining cut the lead to three (63-60). Quigley hit 1 of 2 from the foul line and Reid hit two free throws with 43 second remaining to get the Cards within two.
Anna Martin hit two fouls shots with 41 seconds to push the DePaul lead back to four. Reid scored a layup with 29 seconds to cut the lead to 66-64. The Cardinals forced DePaul into a turnover and Hines scored on a jumper with 16 seconds remaining to tie the game at 66. Quigley missed a trey on the final possession forcing the overtime period.
The overtime period once again was close until the Blue Demons scored on back-to-back possessions to take a 72-68 lead with 56 second remaining in the overtime period. Nikki Burton hit a jumper with 31 seconds remaining to cut the lead to two but hit 4 of 4 from the foul line to secure the win. The Cardinals shot just 12 percent in the overtime period while DePaul shot 33 percent.
The Cardinals finished the game shooting 39.1 percent from the field whiled DePaul shot 41.5 percent from field. The Cardinals held a slight 44-42 rebounding advantage. The Blue Demons were able to convert 25 Cardinal turnovers into 34 points.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 9 as they host Providence at 4:00 p.m. in Freedom Hall.
