Women's Tennis Defeats Southern Illinois 7-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's tennis team improved its record to 5-1 with Saturday's 7-0 sweep of the Salukis from Southern Illinois at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals won the doubles point and continued their dominance through the singles to defeat the Salukis.
Amelia Harris and Stefanie Villajuan combined to beat Anastacia Simons and Vishakha Sheoran the top seed with a score of 8-4. The freshman tandem of Mandy Brown and Louise Noe defeated Melanie Delsart and Martina Ce 8-4 at the two spot. Sarah Miller and Gabrielle Duncan had a much closer match, but were still able to come out with the 8-7 win over Jessica Flannery and Jennifer Dien at No. 3.
The Cardinals then conquered Southern Illinois' singles lineup winning in straight sets. The Cards got points from Miller, Harris, Kaysary Mandry, Ashley Irvin and Villajuan and Brown clinched the match.
"Today was a good win for us," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "My main goal with the team is strictly their progress and making sure they are getting better with each match and with each practice. This team is definitely doing that. I feel like we're playing better this weekend than we did last weekend and that is all I'm asking of them. I feel like the results will take care of themselves, we just have to worry about what we do. This team has embraced that and I feel like we can be a much better team at the end of the year than we are now. I'm happy with the win and hopefully we have a great week of practice because we have two very good teams coming in next weekend."
The Cards are back in action Feb. 6 when they play host to Toledo at noon.
