LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville track and field head coach Ron Mann announced the hiring of Terry Winston as assistant coach effective July 1.
Winston, who has 14 years of coaching experience, will join the U of L coaching staff after having spent the last five seasons (2005-2009) at Arizona State University as a men's assistant coach. He will oversee the Cardinal men's and women's sprints, hurdles and relays in addition to academics, alumni and fundraising.
"I am very excited about becoming a part of the track and field program and athletic department at the University of Louisville," said Winston. "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work for Coach Mann and be a part of the staff. You can't help but to be impressed at the coaching staff's competitiveness and drive to be successful and I can't wait to help them achieve greatness at the conference and national level. I am happy to be back in the Midwest which is home for me and to have the chance to coach and recruit in the area that I am familiar with."
Winston replaces former assistant coach Willie Randolph who departed to take over as Director of men's and women's track and field/cross country at his alma matter Central Michigan University.
"Certainly we wish Coach Randolph all the best in his new journey," said Mann. "It was a special opportunity for him to go and be the head coach of his alma matter. This was an important hire for us and I feel Coach Winston gives us the chance to continue building this program. He gives us instant credibility and is a national-caliber coach."
In his five seasons at Arizona State, Winston helped develop the men's sprints, hurdles and relays into one of the nation's best. His group of runners was instrumental in the men's team winning the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championship, 2008 NCAA West Region Championship, finishing runner-up in the PAC-10 Outdoor Championships in 2007 and 2008 and earning their second consecutive top 10 finish at the 2009 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships (5th-Indoor/8th-Outdoor). Winston coached 11 All-Americans, five PAC-10 Outdoor Conference Champions, five MPSF Indoor Champions, three school record holders, two NCAA Outdoor West Region Champions and two PAC-10 Outdoor Championship High Point Award winners (annually recognizing the efforts of one male and one female student-athletes performances at the conference's outdoor championship meet) during his tenure with the Sun Devils.
No stranger to the BIG EAST, Winston was an assistant coach at Virginia Tech for three seasons (2002-2005) where he oversaw the men's and women's sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers. Over that time span, he coached three individual BIG EAST Champions and seven school record holders.
In 2002, Winston was responsible for a pair of hurdlers who earned top five finishes at the U.S. Championships. One of those in Brandi Smith, finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles, was considered to have one of the best turnarounds in the event after not qualifying in it the previous year.
Winston arrived in Blacksburg, Va. after a four-year stint (1997-2001) as an assistant coach in charge of men's and women's sprints at Missouri State University. In his time there, Winston helped guide the women to three indoor and one outdoor Missouri Valley Conference Championships and an All-American performance in the 4x400-meter relay. He was also responsible for the women securing three medals at the 1999 Central American and Caribbean Championships.
Prior to his stop in Springfield, Mo., Winston served two seasons (1996-97) as an assistant coach at Marshall University working with the men's and women's sprinters. In his final year with the Thundering Herd, the men captured the Southern Conference Championship; and he had the privilege coaching sprinter Randy Moss, All-American and Fred Biletnikoff award winner for Marshall's football team as well as six-time Pro Bowler and four-time first-team All-Pro for the NFL's Minnesota Vikings and New England Patriots.
Winston, a native of Alton, Ill., earned a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice from the University of South Carolina in 1995. He was a three-year letterman for the Gamecocks' track and field team, finishing runner-up in the indoor 55-meter hurdles and outdoor 110-meter hurdles at the 1995 SEC Championships.
