LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's and women's outdoor track and field teams will be competing on April 9-11 at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. on the campus of the University of Tennessee.
Louisville will have 33 athletes competing at the unscored meet which features schools from the ACC, BIG EAST, BIG TEN, Conference USA and SEC. The Sea Ray Relays kicked off with the multi-events on Wednesday. The Cards were represented by Jenean Pressley who had to pull out of the meet due to an injury after attempting the 100-meter hurdles. U of L will continue the meet today at 7:00 p.m. ET., with the women's hammer throw, and will continue on Friday and Saturday.
"We are excited to be competing at another great meet this week and are looking forward to the challenge," said U of L head coach Ron Mann.
The Cards earned eight NCAA Mideast Regional qualifying marks, set two school records and won an event title at the Texas Relays and Mike Poehlein Invitational.
Leading the way for the No. 24 Cardinal women was junior Jere' Summers who earned a pair of regional bids. Summers finished third in section A of the discus with a mark of 173-08 (52.94m), the fifth best throw in the NCAA this season. Summers, an Oakland, Calif. native, also led a group of three hammer throwers with a heave of 193-11 (59.11m) to finish third. Junior Lindsey Cook placed sixth with a personal best toss of 191-02 (58.26m), while sophomore D'Ana McCarty took ninth with a throw of 182-03 (55.54m).
Rounding out the regional qualifiers was senior Heather Trimiew who finished fifth in the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.60.
The Cardinal men collected four NCAA regional marks led by redshirt junior Tone Belt and senior Rudon Bastian in the long jump and sophomore Josh Greenwald and redshirt junior Steven Hnat in the discus.
Belt placed second in section B of the long jump with a leap of 24-02.50 (7.38m), while Bastian finished two spots behind in fourth with a mark of 24-01 (7.34m).
Greenwald took third in section B of the discus with a heave of 174-7 (53.21m), while Hackney finished fifth with a toss of 170-10 (52.08m).
"This will give us the opportunity to see where we stand heading into the middle of the season," said Mann. "We want to continue to improve as we draw closer to the BIG EAST Championships and are confident we can do so."
The Cards will return to action on April 16-17 at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.
