LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Redshirt junior Steven Hnat of the University of Louisville's men's track and field team was named this week's BIG EAST field Athlete of the Week for his school record setting performance at the Sea Ray Relays on April 11 as announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
Hnat finished second in the shot put with a school and personal best throw of 58-08.75 (17.90m). Hnat has broken his own record in each meet (three) he has attempted the event this season. He also recorded an NCAA Mideast Regional qualifying mark for the third time, which is tied for 17th best in the country. The Floyds Knob, Ind. native previously received the honor on March 25, the first time it was ever awarded.
"Hnat continues to improve as the season goes along and that's important with BIG EAST, Mideast Regional and NCAA Championships coming up," said U of L assistant coach Dale Cowper.
This is the fourth weekly award and second consecutive for the Cardinals. Rachel Gehret garnered recognition along with Hnat on March 25, while Tone Belt earned honors a week ago on April 8.
The Cards will return to action on April 23-25 at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa and the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa.
