
Volleyball Sweeps Marquette

Lola Arslanbekova had 21 kills and two aces to lead the University of Louisville to a 27-25, 25-23, 25-23 win over visiting Marquette in BIG EAST volleyball action Sunday afternoon in Cardinal Arena.
U of L improves to 14-9 and 6-3 in the league with Marquette dropping to 15-11 and 4-7. U of L was outhit .281 to .260 but outblocked the Golden Eagles 9-6 and aced them five times. Lecia Brown had nine kills and four blocks and Maci Wachtel had a match-high seven digs for the Cardinals. Marquette's Ashley Beyer led with 12 kills and three aces but MU had eight service errors as a team.
"We did what we had to do which is win at home. But I would like to see less unforced errors," said U of L coach Leonid Yelin.
Trailing 16-9 in the first set, U of L rallied to tie at 18 but did not take its first lead until 23-22 on a block by Gwen Rucker. The teams tied at 24 and 25 until Lola Arslanbekova and Lecia Brown each scored to give the Cardinals a 27-25 win. Arslanbekova led with six kills and Rucker had three blocks.
In the second set, U of L blew out to a 14-9 lead before Marquette battled back to a tie at 17. U of L made a run and got to set point at 24-20 when Lecia Brown aced Ashley Beyer. Marquette scored three straight to stave off the loss but a kill by Arslanbekova gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead going into the break.
In the final set, neither team could established a lead of more than three points in a set that had 14 ties and seven lead changes. After coming back to tie at 22, U of L allowed Ashley Beyer to sneak a ball by to give Marquette a 23-22 lead. Beyer then committed a service error to knot the score at 23 before Justine Landi and Kasey Heckelman each had a kill to tip the match to the Cardinals.
U of L heads for USF this Friday and then on to Georgetown on Sunday Nov. 8 for the final road trip of the regular season.
