The Louisville men, ranked 19th in the preseason USTFCCCA Top 25, will have four athletes competing at the Texas Relays, including Rudon Bastian, Andre Black, Phil Feinberg and Edmund Yeboah, while the Cardinal women will have nine athletes competing, including Seidre Forde, Rachel Gehret, Holly Geibel, Christine Krellwitz, Theresa Lewis, Chinwe Okoro, ZeNai Savage, Jere' Summers and Heather Trimiew.
Along with the group of athletes competing in Texas, the Cards will also have a group competing at the Austin Peay Invitational in Clarksville, Tenn., on Saturday.
"We'll have some of our national-level athletes to competing at the Texas Relays, one of the premier outdoor meets in the nation," said Cards' head coach Ron Mann. "And we'll also have a group of athletes competing at Austin Peay with the goal of earning several conference qualifying marks. With several events being cancelled at Georgia Tech because of the weather, it's important that get as many BIG EAST qualifiers early on so we can focus on improving on existing marks and working towards the championship season in May and June."
Last week, the Cards earned seven NCAA Mideast Regional qualifying marks and numerous BIG EAST qualifiers with athletes competing at the Raleigh (N.C.) Relays and the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. However, the Cards missed out on several other opportunities to earn regional and conference qualifying marks as eight running events and five field events were cancelled at the Yellow Jacket Invite due to heavy rain.
Leading the way for the Louisville women was the trio of Jere' Summers, ZeNai Savage and Chinwe Okoro, who each earned NCAA regional marks in the shot put on Saturday in Atlanta. Summers also added a second-place finish in the discus on Saturday and was second in the hammer on Friday with an NCAA regional mark in that event as well, while Lindsey Cook added a regional qualifying mark on Friday in the hammer.
Leading the way for the Louisville men last week was redshirt freshman Michael Eaton with a third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run on the first day of competition at North Carolina State's Raleigh Relays with an NCAA Mideast Regional qualifying time of 13 minutes, 54.72 seconds. Joining Eaton with a regional qualifying time in the 5,000m was junior Cory Thorne with a seventh-place time of 14:04.36.
Following this weekend's events, the Cards will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the University of Tennessee's Sea Ray Relays on April 9-12.
