Gibson Earns NCAA Provisional Time at Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT, Calif. - University of Louisville junior Cory Thorne earned an NCAA Mideast Regional qualifying bid in the men's 5,000m run, while senior Taryn Gibson earned a provisional qualifying time in the women's 10,000m run Friday night at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
Thorne, a native of Portsmouth, N.H., finished with a personal best time of 13 minutes, 55.56 seconds to take fifth place overall in the field of 26 runners and finish fourth among collegiate runners. The time ranks 10th nationally this season and is an improvement of more than eight seconds over his previous best time set earlier this season.
Gibson, a native of Canonsburg, Pa., finished 14th overall in the field of 21 runners as was ninth among collegiate runners with a time of 34:40.11, the second best time in school history. The time is nearly 20 seconds faster than the minimum time needed to earn a provisional bid to the NCAA Outdoor Championships and it ranks among the top 30 in the nation this season.
The Cards will host the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational on Saturday at Cardinal Park with the field events starting at 9 a.m. ET, and the running events at 10 a.m.
