The prequalifying draw of the ITA Regionals concluded Wednesday afternoon, with Amelia Harris of Louisville, Ryann Cutillo of Wake Forest, Andrea Herrera of Middle Tennessee and Hailey Hemm of UNC all earning spots in the qualifying round.
The first two rounds of the qualifying draw of 64 will begin Thursday morning at 8 a.m. followed by the first round doubles (not before 2 p.m ) "I am happy for Amelia because she had a strong debut here at the ITAs. She is improving and showing great strides in her game in her first two months here," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham.
Harris defeated Lisa Wilkinson of Winthrop 6-4, 6-4 and then went on to beat Alex Dachos of Middle Tennessee State 6-2, 6-2 to earn a berth in the qualifying draw. The freshman from Wellington, New Zealand is showing early promise for the Cardinals.
"She played a girl from New Zealand that she had faced before but never had beaten. She came out today and played confidently and that should carry over into the qualifying rounds," said Beckham.
