WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 22nd-ranked University of Louisville Cardinal women's soccer team took their first loss of the season , 2-0 to perennial ACC power Wake Forest Wednesday night on the road at Spry Stadium.
The first twenty minutes of the match went back and forth with both teams having opportunities to take the lead, but Wake (3-3-0) was the first to take advantage of their opportunity. In the 12th minute Amanda Lebo played a ball in behind the Louisville defense to Jill Hutchinson breaking into the left side of the 18 yard box. Hutchinson took one touch then fired the ball toward the near upper corner, glancing off the post and into the back of the net to give the Demon Deacons a 1-0 lead.
Just minutes later the Cardinals (4-1-0) nearly equalized on their best scoring opportunity of the match. Midfielder Mallory Lampson broke through the heart of the Wake Forest defense, but the Wake goalkeeper came off her line quickly and was able to save Lampson's initial shot. The rebound fell to Kelsey Hunyadi, but her follow-up shot was cleared by a defender covering the goal line. The ball then came back out to Lampson, but her effort was once again cleared off the line, this time off the head of a Wake defender.
Unable to find an equalizer, the momentum seemed to fall in favor of the Deacons. Just seconds into the second half Victoria Delbono dribbled in behind the left side of the Louisville defense and slotted the ball back to the far post, where Sarah Winslow was waiting to pass the ball past Louisville goalkeeper Joanna Haig and into the back of the net.
The Cardinals will host Ohio State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park. A live video webcast of the game will be available on-line to subscribers at UofLsports.com through the All-Access package.
