Cleveland, Ohio - The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and Eastman Kodak Company announced today the 2007 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Kodak/WBCA All-America Basketball Team. Louisville sophomore Angel McCoughtry was selected to the 10-person team, becoming Louisville's first Kodak All-American. This year's team marks the 33rd year of the longest running sponsorship in women's athletics. Selection committees in each of the eight WBCA geographical regions select ten of the top women's basketball players in the nation to be honored.
"I was speechless when I found out," said McCoughtry. "It was a goal of mine to become an all-american but I never expected it to happen this soon. I want to first thank God, my family and my teammates for helping me get to this position. It is an incredible honor and I just hope I can continue to improve and represent the University of Louisville well."
"Throughout the 2006-2007 season, these ten players have been a pleasure to watch and have proven themselves to be deserving of this honor," said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. "The growth of our game is in the hands of many of these young student-athletes and we look forward to watching their future in women's basketball continue to unfold."
Earlier this week McCoughtry was named a second team All-American by the Associated Press and a first team All-American by Sports Page Magazine.com. She became the first Cardinal to earn a spot on the Associated Press All-America team. Jill Morton and Sara Nord both earned honorable mention honors. McCoughtry earned BIG EAST Player of the Year honors after becoming just the second player in BIG EAST history to average a double-double. The 6-1 sophomore averaged 21.5 points and 10.3 rebounds per game this season. She also led the league in steals, averaging 3.5 per game and double-doubles with 19 on the season.
McCoughtry became just the third player in school history to score 1,000 career points in just two seasons. The sophomore scored her 1,000th career point in the Cardinals' NCAA Tournament win over BYU. She shattered the season scoring record this seasons with 754 points this season.
