
Women's Basketball Wins the Panera Bread Challenge

Chattanooga, Tenn. - The Louisville (3-2) women's basketball team defeated Chattanooga (4-2) 80-53 Saturday evening to win the Panera Bread Challenge. Angel McCoughtry recorded a double-double with 26 points and 10 steals. Chauntise Wright also chipped in 14 points while Brooke Hand led Chattanooga with 18 points.
Chattanooga jumped out to a 13-4 lead to start the game. Louisville then went on a 9-0 run to tie the game on a McCoughtry three-point play with 12:51 remaining in the first half. The lead changed hands until the Cards went on a 12-2 run to go up 28-18 at the 6:08 mark. Then the Lady Mocs' Hand hit three consecutive 3-pointers to cut the lead to three with 4:10 remaining.
Brandie Radde nailed a 3-pointer on the next possession. Chattanooga answered with a 3-pointer from Wade-Fray. Free throws from Courtney Simmons and Patrika Barlow gave the Cardinals a five point lead with 1:26 left. Chattanooga finished the half with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 35 heading into the break.
The Cardinals began the second half with a 4-0 run in the first two minutes. Chattanooga continued to hit the long range shot early in the second half tying the game twice and taking a one point lead with 14:01 remaining. Louisville responded with their pressure defense which resulted in a 30-2 run to go ahead 75-48 with 3:04 remaining.
A 3-pointer by Erin Ogan at 2:22 cut the Cardinal run but the game was out of reach. Louisville finished the game shooting a season-high 57.9 percent from the field while Chattanooga finished the game shooting 35.7 percent from the field. The Cardinals outrebounded the Lady Mocs 38-28 while forcing Chattanooga into 24 turnovers.
McCoughtry was named the Panera Bread Challenge MVP after scoring 58 points over the weekend. Candyce Bingham was also named to the all-tournament team.
The Cardinals will host their home opener on Sunday, Dec. 2 as they host Florida at 2:00 p.m. in Freedom Hall.
