COLUMBUS, Ohio - - The 14th-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team scored two goals in a two-minute span to defeat host Ohio State 2-1 Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals improve to 10-5 on the season, while the Buckeyes drop to 5-9.
The teams played through a scoreless first half in which OSU held a 4-2 edge in shots and corners. The Cards finally broke through with freshman Tuli Lim connected on junior Lauren Schaefer's penalty corner pass to make it a 1-0 game at the 51:12 mark.
Louisville struck again just two minutes later when sophomore Kayla May scored off of senior Allison Maffitt's feed to make it a 2-0 game at the 53:18 mark.
The Buckeyes pulled within one at the 60:37 mark when Yesenia Luces collected a pass from Kelly Terwilliger and sent a shot past Cardinal goalkeeper senior Marie-Claire Heller.
Ohio State drew four more penalty corners and fire off three shots on goal in the final 10 minutes, but the Cardinal defense held strong with Heller posting three more saves to preserve the win.
"We sustained a lot of pressure today defensively," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "We were able to stay in the game play by play against a talented Ohio State team; and when we had the opportunity to attack, we took advantage of it."
U of L (10-5, 4-1 BIG EAST) will travel to Villanova for a BIG EAST Conference matchup Sunday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m.
