
Field Hockey Shuts Out No. 20 Villanova 2-0

VILLANOVA, Pa. - - The 14th-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team handed host No. 20 Villanova a 2-0 loss in a BIG EAST Conference matchup Sunday. The Cardinals improve to 11-5 (4-1 BIG EAST) while Villanova falls to 10-4 (3-2).
Senior Allison Maffitt opened the scoring at the 8:45 mark when she sent a rebound off of Villanova goalkeeper Maura McCormick's pads into the cage for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
At the 24:44 minute mark, freshman Nicole Youman added an insurance goal, notching her sixth goal of the season on a penalty corner assist from senior Casey Meizinger.
The Cards entered the break with a 2-0 lead after outshooting the Wildcats 9-4. The teams had five penalty corners each in the first half.
Louisville maintained the 2-0 lead throughout the second half, holding off a Villanova offense that outshot the Cards 8-5 and had a 4-3 edge in corners.
Cardinal goalkeeper Marie-Claire Heller posted two saves en route to her fourth shutout of the season. McCormick registered eight stops for Villanova. The Cardinals outshot the Wildcats 14-12 with Villanova holding a 9-8 edge in corners in the game.
U of L (11-5) returns to Trager Stadium for a 3 p.m. matchup against Stanford on Friday. The Cardinals will celebrate senior day when they face BIG EAST opponent Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 21 at Trager Stadium.
