South Orange, NJ - The University of Louisville women's basketball team defeated Seton Hall 65-45 Saturday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium. Three Cardinals scored in double figures with Jazz Covington leading the way with 14 points. Freshman forward Angel McCoughtry recorded her fifth double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds and senior Jessica Huggins finished with 10 points. Shantel Brown led Seton Hall with 11 points.
"I told our kids all along that if they wanted to win they were going to have to find a way to grind this thing out," said head coach Tom Collen. "I thought in the first half we really left the door open for them. I thought in the second half they really wore them down and we shot the ball a lot better. There were some areas where we really played well and I think we hit a point in time when Seton Hall really believed they were going to win the game and that is when we really took control."
Louisville jumped out to an early 10-2 lead at the 13:12 mark. Seton Hall then went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to one with 11:46 remaining in the half. Louisville then went on a 5-0 run to take a 15-9 lead. The Cardinals used a 9-2 run to take their biggest lead of the half at 24-13 with just under four minute left in the half. The Cardinals went into the lockerroom with a 30-21 lead.
Seton Hall started the second half with a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 30-25 in the first two minutes. Covington scored on a layup for the first Cardinal points of the half. The Pirates scored on the next possession and then Louisville went on a 7-0 run to build a 12-point lead with 11:42 left to play. The Pirates cut the lead to seven with a 5-0 run but the Cardinals went on a 6-0 run of their own to take a 45-34 lead at the 7:30 mark. Both teams traded baskets until Louisville went on an 11-0 run capped by a Huggins three-pointer to take a 61-42 lead at the 1:54 mark.
Louisville finished the game shooting 42.3 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the arc. Seton Hall finished the game shooting 27.1 percent from the field and 25 percent from behind the arc. Louisville finished the game with a 52-27 rebounding advantage.
The Cardinals will wrap up the regular season on Tuesday evening as they host Providence at 7:00 p.m. in Freedom Hall. The game is senior night for Louisville seniors Jessica Huggins and Connie Neal.
