
Women's Basketball Falls 79-63 at St. John's

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's used a 10-1 run to start the second half to defeat the University of Louisville women's basketball team 79-63 Wednesday evening at Carnesecca Arena. Angel McCoughtry led the Cardinals with 15 points and Yuliya Tokova led the Cardinals on the boards with nine rebounds. Kia Wright led St. John's with 19 points.
St. John's jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the first three minutes of play. Louisville then went on a 9-0 run to take a 13-8 lead with 12:23 remaining in the opening half. With 6:56 left in the first half, the Red Storm's Kia Wright hit a jumper to cut the lead to one. Then Tina Sten hit a three-pointer to tie the score up at 26 with 5:28 left in the half.
Both teams traded baskets until St. John's went on a 15-2 run to go up 42-31 with 1:17 left in the half. The Cardinals then went on a 5-0 run led by Jessica Huggins with all five points to cut the lead to 42-36 with under 30 seconds remaining. A foul called in the final seconds gave St. John's a 45-36 lead at the break.
St. John's started the second half with a 10-1 run to take a 55-37 lead at the 17:44 mark of the second half. The Cardinals cut the lead to 14 at the 8:38 mark but that was the closest they would get.
Louisville finished the game shooting 41.8 percent from the field while St. John's shot 50.8 percent. The Red Storm won the battle on the boards with a 41-31 advantage.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 18 as they travel to Cincinnati for a 2 p.m. ET matchup with the Bearcats.
